SHE (Sustainable Health Enterprises)

S.H.E. office in Kigali

This weekend while in Kigali, my friend and I visited an organization called SHE (Sustainable Health Enterprises) Wow, were we impressed. They are a fantastic nonprofit organization that goes out into communities and schools around Rwanda to educate and train teachers on the human-topic of menstruation. Menstruation is still a taboo topic here, as SHE explained, and many people don’t know what happens to their sisters/mothers/daughters bodies every month and many girls don’t even understand the normal occurrence of their own bodies because there has hardly been any education around it. And there are some interesting myths. For example, many people believe muzungus (foreigners) don’t menstruate. I couldn’t help but laugh when one of the women at SHE told me this. But how would you know any better if no one has taught you about it and the topic of the female body is under such secrecy? Luckily, SHE is helping improve understanding and is educating the populace. But they don’t just educate; they also create. Right now they are creating eco-friendly, legitimate sanitary pads that girls can afford. Therefore, girls won’t have to miss school 5 days out of every month and can stay caught up with their studies. SHE is an amazing organization! And they were so welcoming and informative. Thank you SHE! Check out their video below or visit their website.
